Asa Singleton is a cheerful, happy go lucky kid aged twelve. He also has a disease called Neurofibromatosis 2 (also called NF2) which causes tumours to grow on nerve endings within the body. It is normally a genetic disease that only affects 1 in 40,000 people. However in Asa's case it was a spontaneous mutation. This disease has already claimed most of his vision, but with the small amount of sight he retained he leads a full and normal life, although he is registered blind.
Asa's condition has recently taken a turn for the worse when tumors were detected on his acoustic nerves. Clearly they require surgical removal at the earliest opportunity and the primary concern is to retain as much of Asa's hearing as possible. We have considered many medical opinions and estimates of how much of Asa's hearing can be saved vary. However the clear message we have received is that there are specialists in this field who can give Asa the very best chance. Although we have a wonderful team of surgeons at Southampton Hospital, we have had to scan the world to find a team who are able to perform this delicate operation to preserve Asa's hearing.

The premiere screening of This Is Asa on Friday 20th April was a sellout success.
crowds of supporters turned up for the event to see the film for the first time and help raise the funds to send it to film festivals worldwide.
At the after party, music from Paul Armfield, Cozy Flashbak and The Chancers added to what was a great evenings entertainment.

Nearly 300 guests attended a service at St Mary's Catholic Church yesterday to see Asa baptised into the Catholic faith.
The service was followed by a celebration at the Ryde Castle which went on well into the night.
Religeon has played a big part in Asa's life of late, and he takes great strength from his faith in times of hardship.
Asa would like to thank all those who attended and made it a very special day.

GLOBAL interest in the story of 14-year-old Asa Singleton, who travelled the world to store up memories before he loses his sight, has prompted a family friend to make a documentary about him.
Simon Higgin spent the summer in the shadow of the plucky Ryde teenager, who has a condition that causes tumours to grow on his body.
He recorded interviews with Asa, his family, friends, surgeons and teachers and followed him doing his routine activities and attending events such as the Nokia IW Festival.
When American film companies offered money for the story, and ITN News and Channel 4 both enquired about making programmes, the family sat down to decide what to do.
Despite the offers of cash, Asa was reluctant to be filmed by strangers but the answer came when Simon offered to help.
He set up a company, Skygod Film Productions, and has made an upbeat documentary about Asa, keeping the editorial content close to home.
Filming is almost complete and Simon hopes to have the editing finished by the end of the year, complete with an original score by Ryde musician Rick Stanbridge and voice-over by Ryde actress Gwen Glover.

After our decision to raise more awareness about NF2, we set off to London for GMTV's This Morning show before flying to New York for two TV interviews : NBC Today and INSIDER.
With the massive publicity raised by these programmes and continued press interest worldwide it was not long before we were approached by several Film and TV companies for rights to Film, dramatisation and Documentaries.
After sitting down and discussing this with Asa it was clear that it would be a real strain for him to cope with the intrusion.
With this in mind we turned down all offers.
Asa, however, was keen to do something with close friend Simon Higgin. Simon has set up Skygod Films and was keen to offer a long term commitment over the summer months at a pace Asa would find easier to handle.
Simon has been around since the early days and was also one of the Peru Trekkers. He wanted to film Asa in his everyday environment in order to show Asa's strong positive personality.
Filming began in July and should be completed by late 2005. Simon then intends to submit the film to major International Film Festivals before offering it to broadcast.
Proceeds from the film will be going directly to Asa's Trust Fund.
Our hope is that the film will raise more awareness of Asa's condition which in turn will generate funding to find a cure for research. Maybe then a miracle will be found to free our son from this nightmare.

SKYGOD FILMS: producer and director pose for a photo!
The 2005 IOW Festival was the highlight of the summer for Asa. The live music and atmosphere was great both in and out of the festival. But most memorable for Asa was his stint backstage thanks to mate Riks guest wristband!!
After successfully negotiating the security guards Asa managed to charge-down Michael Stipe of REM, before chatting with Embrace and meeting Romeo of Magic Numbers.
But the greatest moment of the weekend was meeting Starsailor, Barry (keyboards) and Ben (drums) were more than happy to take the time to chat with Asa over a cuppa before getting a signed songsheet and a few photos from the band. Lead singer James was a little surprised when ambushed returning from the loo..!! but signed the sheet and stopped to chat anyway.
All in all a great weekend.

Paul and Asa appeared today on ITV's This Morning programme with Fern Britton and Philip Schofield, giving a lengthy interview before flying to New York later to appear in 3 TV programmes. NBC - The Today Show on Friday morning, Entertainment Tonight on Friday Evening and Inside Storey (time to be confirmed) - all in USA time. Paul hopes to highlight there, as well as he did here, the need for funding to support research on NF1 & 2.
He was able during the interview today to acknoledge the help and support given in particular by the Isle of Wight community. A surprised Asa was presented with a guitar and the interviews went well and the response excellant.
Well, as a lot of you have now seen, the story of our epic trip around the globe has gone very public. I was very concerned at first for the protection of Asa, but after sitting down with him and the family it was decided it would be good to speak to people about the trip and to bring the attention of NF2 to so many others.
There are families across the world who, like us, wait and hope for a breakthrough in beating this terrible condition. In this world we now live in, exposure like this (to the mainly unaware public) can only help us in the long term.
It was always my intention to travel with Asa when he was older and he could take on more and better understand the world we live in.
As Asa's Father I have seen, in his short, life how much he has had to get through including over thirty hours of surgery. I have been watching as this has slowly taken hold of his body, but not his mind!
After the surgery in L.A two years ago Asa has really struggled with his balance, as the nerve on his right side was cut, and in turn his vision has deteriorated.
I spoke to Debbie and said the trip would have to be sooner rather than later, and after sitting down with Asa and planning the countries, we decided to go September 2004. We needed the all clear from all Asa's consultants from Southampton General, and I hoped Asa would stay well on the build up until the day we were leaving.
I had taken a year off from work and made the decision to sell my share of the company to help fund the trip.
We got the all clear from the consultants and went to Bath Travel to sort out the tickets for the round the world trip. Departing September 10th 2004. We spent nearly six months travelling the world and for Asa to do so much, and see the different cultures was everything I set out to do for him and more.
From Fast Water Canoeing in France, to the Huge Firework Displays in Germany, Gondola in Venice, Coliseum and Vatican in Rome, the Raw Beauty of Cyprus, the Boat Journey across to Egypt, the Pyramids and the feeling of sitting with Asa on one of them, and Asa being amazed by the treasures of Tutankhamen.
The Sunset across the Egyptian Desert, the Spiritual side of Japan and all the Temples, the Stunning South of Thailand and all the Islands and the Friendly People of Koh Samui, the elephant Trek, Asa shooting a gun at the range in Thailand, Swimming on Empty Beaches, Hiring a Boat and going to James Bond Island, Climbing Sydney Bridge, Snorkelling off the Barrier Reef, Skydiving at 10,000 feet, Sea Plane over Sydney Harbour, Driving down the Gold Coast, Camping in New Zealand, Whale Watching and Swimming with Dolphins, Hot Water Pools in the Mountains, Fast Water Boating on the Huka, standing next to the Fur Seals on the Pacific, Sky Tower in Auckland, Ice Bar, Antarctic Experience, Snow on a Mountain Pass, Kikora, a Town shadowed by Snow Topped Mountains, The Lush Green Plantation of Hawaii and the Lapping Ocean of Aqua Colours, the Whales so close to the Shore, the Red Jeep we took across Maui.
The Queen Mary at Lon Beach, Universal Studios, the lights of Las Vegas, the shows and excitement, the Music of New Orleans and so many buskers, the Hoverboats at the Florida Keys, the set up to Superbowl in Jacksonville, the Vintage Car Drive by, the Jet Car Ride which he loved in Old Town Florida, Niagara Falls, Sky Tower and that is just the Highlights of our amazing journey away for nearly six months.
We are now back and settling in again to everyday life. Asa has started High School but already has had two minor operations. He keeps going. He is Happy and Positive. That's all we ask for in him.
I know that the visions he has taken on this journey will hold strong forever and the experiences will help him as the future unfolds.

From the Isle of Wight County Press: 17 December 2004
The family of 13-year-old Asa Singleton hope that by giving him the holiday of a lifetime he will be better able to fight the debilitating condition he suffers from.
Now almost completely blind and with tumours threatening his whole body, there is little doctors can do to control the condition, neurofibromatosis 2.
But Asa has always enjoyed being on holiday in the sunshine so his dad, Paul, has taken him on a trip around the world, ending up in Los Angeles where Asa will again meet his surgeon for another check-up.
They left the Island in September and plan to return home in February. Money from Asa's trust fund was used to pay for Asa's flights and Paul sold hist share of the business he built up, Ryde Demolition, to finance his part of the holiday and other expenses.
Asa's mum, Debbie, of Pellhurst Road Ryde, said:
'Asa looks on the outside as if he is doing well but his body is bad inside and his last scan results were not brilliant.
'His eyesight has really started to deteriorate and he cannot even read his watch face anymore. His balance is not very good and he has to lean on people to walk now, he cannot walk on his own. He is also losing the hearing in his good ear.
'We just want to do what we can for him in whatever time we have got. We told him he could go on holiday while he is OK and at the moment we are just giving him a good life.
'Hopefully one day there will be a miracle, you never know but he loves life and I think that will probably keep him going longer than the doctors will.'
Paul said: 'The whole trip was planned around Asa, who sat down with me and told me the countries he would like to visit. We have visited family in France, friends in Germany, been to Rome and Naples, family in Cyprus, visited the Pyramids in Egypt, then on to Japan, all around the south of Thailand, to Australia and then New Zealand.'
Among the highlights for Asa were a 10,000ft tandem jump from an aircraft, with a perfect landing, and climbing Sydney Harbour Bridge while wearing a safety harness.
They will fly to Hawaii for Christmas and in the new year Asa has his appointment with his surgeon in Los Angeles.
Before returning home they will stop off at Las Vegas, Florida and Canada.
Debbie and Asa's sister, Dominique, 16, hope to meet up with them in Florida.
Paul said: 'This has been an incredible journey for us and at times very emotional. Asa has done so much and as his father I am so proud of him and what he has achieved. Asa and I would like to wish everyone a happy Christmas.'
The Singleton family have pointed out that they have not authorised any carol singers to raise money for Asa's trust fund. They are concerned at reports that bogus callers have been collecting money for themselves and claiming it will go to Asa.
Paul and Asa in Egypt
Asa and his father, Paul are enjoying the holiday of a lifetime while Asa is fit enough to enjoy it.
The concept of trekking in Peru were put together with my good friend Paul Ronan. Paul has been closely involved with my goals for Asa, having previous experience in trekking in Africa, we decided Peru was the best challenge.
From a personal point of view, I wanted to do something for Asa that would be a competitive challange as well as finding the time in untouched surroundings to help find my inner feelings in this very difficult period.
We asked suitable people one by one to join us and we felt the team put together was the best, first the the funds to be raised and secondly to ensure the trekk would be a success.
Lee Daniels is Asa's step dad and a very good friend to me. This was also very personal to him. All of the details were put together by Paul Ronan, everything was organised in fine detail.
We started our journey on November 5th. After a long flight we arrived in Lima 24 hours after leaving the island. On arrival in Cuzco we were all amazed at the diference in oxygen levels due to the altitude which was 11,000 ft above sea level. We stayed in Cuzco for 48 hours which was needed before the trekk could begin.
We met our guide (Rolphie) 12 hours before the start and we couldn't have wished for a better person to lead us on the challenge ahead. At 7.30am we loaded our luggage onto the bus ready to meet the other guides and mule team.
It was a strange feeling being in the middle of nowhere with snow capped mountains towering above us as we sorted out our day bags (2 litres of water, wet gear, snacks, camera etc.). We started our first trekk at 10am. It was a clear day with everyone really excited about what was to come. For me I was very focused on what was ahead and felt very strong mentally. Within two hours a pattern deveoped within the team, all of us felt the steady climb. Rolphie himself was finding it very hard, to all our amazement, was sick and feeling the strain.
Over the next 5 days we wouldn't pass any other tourists, this was like passing through mountains and valleys where life and scenary would have been the same here 1000 years ago.
Our mule team consists of two mule men and two cooks. They worked very well together. Each day they set up camp, looked after the main bags, cooked our food which we all agreed was as good as some resturants. They would pack up again and pass us on the trekk and be set up again ready for the next night. Some of the people we did meet were children dressed in bright clothes and funny hats with grinded-in dirt covering them. They looked and stared. We would give them sweets and fruit from a day bags. It was fascinating to watch, they didn't have a clue what the sweets were and we had to put out hands to our mouths and show them.
The humour and the banter played a big part in the team, without doubt a bind was formed very early with us all which will stay with me for a long time. As the trekk took us higher we could all feel the strain of the altitude which for me consists of headaches, swollen eyes and sore throat.
However much I was hurting, I would thiunk of Asa and what he has been through and this would always push me on. When we reached the highest point (4,800 m) it was a great sense of achievement and everyone was very proud to have reached this point. I looked around and took in all the details and even now I can sit and shut my eyes and see all these points again. After taking many pictures and thanking all the team for getting to this point I decided I wanted to go up to a higher peak to leave a personal charm for Asa. It was only a personal thing but I needed to leave something there for him. I reached a point where I felt was the best place, sat their for what seemed a short time (it was about 30 minutes). A very emotional moment and the charm looks over a huge peak which I can only describe as the most spectacular sight I have ever seen.
Asa has mentioned to me beofre that when he dreams it is like everything is close up. At first I didn't understand then I realised that Asa sees best when he looks very close to something, so when he dream he sees the same as me and you. When I had my moment on the mountain I prayed that with the charm Asa could see the mountain as well.
After about an hour we set off again to begin the trekk around the mountain and desend to base camp for the night. As the altitude changes you see so many extrordinary plants, their colour are like nothing I have ever seen before - very vivid and luminous at times. The weather held out and we experienced another good nights rest at camp.
After reaching the highest point it was still three more days before we reached Machu-Picchu. We were walking the best part of 7-8 hours a day and by the 4th day everyone was feeling much stronger. As we weaved our way down through the moutain passes, the air became that mch better and to lose that throbbing head was such a refief.
At night we all sat in the dinner tent and played cards and generally relaxed. The last day in the mountains was one of the longest and also where we waw some spectacular sites. Various Inca ruins, some very difficult passes with sheer drops, water falls, stunning views looking to the Amazon.
We reached Machu Picchu late afternoon and were amazed at the sheer sight and size of it. What was very disapointing was that we had reached other travellers. After the solitude of our trekk it was strange to be back in the company of other people again.
One of the most memorable moments was when Lee Danields, Andy Leal and myself took on Wanu-Picchu, the mountain overlooking Macchu-Picchu. It was a real effort to reach the top, but once we reached the summit I personally was opverwhelemed with the realisation of what I has just achieved. I would never have thought I could do it. I thank Lee and Andy for their support and sharing those moments at the top.
We didn't have long before our flight down to the Amazon so we re-organised our bags so as to keep them light, as we would now be carrying them for 3 days.
It was total contrast stepping off the place deep in the Amazon, with a temperature of 102 and humidity of 98%. By the time we collected our bags, sweat covered my shirt and felt so uncomfortable. We then travelled by coach to the transfer point where a motorboat took us down the Amazon River for about 1 hour then a 5km trek to a canoe across the lake to our lodge. All our treks started at the lodge, normally one in the morning and one at night.
On a personal note, after the mountains, the trek in the Amazon Jungle wasn't my cup of tea and although i'm glad I extended the trip to there, I would in hindsight have preferred to trek 3 more days in the mountains. We met Toby and Kirsly at the lodge and I must thank them for their support with Asa.
The last day at the lodge was a night trek, something I was dreading due to my fear of snakes. We crossed the lake in canoes and started the 3km trek through the jungle, just as light was going down.
The noise is something I wont forget as you get this orchestra of sound from all the animals, birds etc. We all had torches and kept behind the guide. It wasn't long before we started seeing lizards, tarantulas, night monkeys and many different species of birds. A shout went out when someone found a snake, I think I stopped running after 150 meters and by the time I turned around there was no sign of light. I looked round and didn't know which was to walk. Lucky for me John Martin had noticed I had run by and had come to look for me straight away. I was very grateful for Johns support and we slowly proceeded towards the pick up point.
The journey home was long and boring, hours and hours of traveling. All of us had enjoyed the trip, I can't thank them enough fo their support and for making this trip a trip of a lifetime. Thanks again lads.

I leave for Peru on 5th November with 7 friends.
We have been planning this trek over the last few months. All of us have funded this trip ourselves and aim to raise as much as possible through sponsorship. We fly into Lima on the first day and are transferred up to Cusco for 2 days to acclimatize as it is 3,900 meters above sea level.
Our first part of the trek takes us through Papichu and Chilipahua and will all be around 4,000 meters above sea level. We will be trekking nearly every day for up to 8 hours and will go as high as 5,000 meters.
The trek will take us to Machu Picchu and from there we take the train back to Cusco and then transferred to the Amazon Basin. We will then trek and canoe for 3 days.
If you are interested in sponsoring, please contact us or send a cheque to:

Fancy getting into Warren Steele's leathers? No. not like that. Having his leathers as your very own.
Y'see, Wozza's trick armoured and vented Scorpion Husky PWR race leathers are up to grabs to the highest bidder. It's not because Warren's fallen on hard times, far from it. Rather the golden-hearted man of British supermoto wants to help raise the £60,000 needed to help send a Hampshire youngster to America for an urgent operation.
Warren met the plucky youngster [Asa] on a cross-channel ferry whilst en-route to a European SM round, and was so moved by his story that he decided to do something to help. And that's where you guys come in.
Many of Warren's race sponsors have come up trumps, supplying kit to be auctioned for the fund. There's a Lazer helmet, Spy goggles, a pair of Bridgestone tyres, and a trick Scorpion race pipe for your bike. A subscription to Supermoto Magazine is the icing on the cake.
We'll be starting the ball rolling with a donation to the fighting fund, while trackday specialists 100% Bikes have agreed to donate a share of the entry fee from each supermoto bike which signs up to future trackdays. And there's even talk of the S1 World Championship guys getting in on the act.
The is a great chance to help Warren kick-off his fundraising for Asa's life-changing operation, and we urge you to chip in. Simply place your sealed bids for any of the items mentioned (or a donation), in an envelope marked 'Wozza's Auction and send it to: Supermoto Magazine, PO Box 9845, London W13 9WO. Don't forget to include your name and contact details and let us know if you wish for your bid to remain confidential.

We have just seen the doctors and have been told Asa has only a small amount of hearing after surgery if at all.We are completly devastated and in shock.I was so positive that this would turn out OK but now just numb.We have been told the second operation is not a option on the left ear as this could also effect Asa's good hearing side.We need time now to decide what to do next.
Message from Debbie:
Well what can I say,Im totally gutted.I felt so positive they could preserve some hearing, but thats just not to be the case.We now have to let nature take its course. The tumour on the left side is 1.8.cm and with no growth patern we dont know how long before it takes his hearing. When it does there is a chance of a cochlear implant, which would give Asa some degre of hearing. With all the prayers said around the world I wonder if there is anyone out there for him. This disease is evil,Its taken my sons vision, his sence of smell and now slowly taking his hearing.Asa has a 3cm tumour on his growth gland which is causing alarm with his consultants.Asa's strength and willpower is an inspiration to all us humans and he wont give in to this.Asa loves life and as his parents we can only hope and pray for a cure.
Message from Paul:
I dont know what to say except I feel so bad,I tried to take a positive route in trying to preserve Asas's hearing but have failed.I know so many people were there for Asa and I really thought for once Asa had won over this evil disease.I only wanted the normal things for my son,not more,Asa has not got a bad bone in his body and he deserves this break. He is my strentgh and as normal just takes this setback in his stride.Today we are down but tomorrow we will pick ourselves up and face this together,we cant and wont give up.
The Doctor now has said we can move over to Seton Care Centre where we will oversee Asa ourselves. We have all medication and Asa is really please to be able to get out. We take him back in a wheelchair and Asa want to get out and sit in the garden and sit in the sun.
A lot of cards have arrived from England and we spend time reading them all. Asa and I have played cards and watched a video (Meet the Parents).
The hospital is situated in down town LA - a gangland area, we are told not to go out walking at ngiht (a bit like Ryde!). The Doctors and staff are very informal and really pleased to be here to help us and we know that this is the best place in the world for hearing surgery.
Asa's team of consultants see him on a daily basis and keep us informed of everything. Many people from all over the world are here and also staff from all departments have visited Asa. Even in a huge population like Los Angeles, Asa still remains a celebrity. There have been radio interviews also invites to Universal Film Studios, and met some people from Baywatch. The love and caring from peple we have not met before has been so warm and something we will not forget.
People have stopped us and said we have a special person in Asa, something I already know.
- Paul Singleton
Asa was nauseous about 5am and given medication (IV line) at 7.30. He had some toast and bacon and felt ok. Asa's Doctor came in and gave him a brief ear test. There was a reaction but a small amount and we now hope over the next few weeks the area around the ear settles down and the hearing improves. The nerves are intact and that is positive news. Only time will tell the extent of Asa's hearing.
When Asa's bandage was removed on Sunday morning I held my breath. The wound is about 6 inches long and has 13 staples. The Doctor used a hearing key to try Asa's hearing, when asked if he could hear the tone Asa said 'yes' (YES!!!) - one of the most important moments in my life. I am trying to stay calm. Asa just doesnt react and is more worried that they have put staples in and asks how they are going to be removed!
After the Doctor has gone we start cleaning him up and start our own tests. We ask him to lay on the pillow on his good side ans atart talking to him and he is finding is hard to hear us.
I find the Doctor and he explains we must wait and see because the nerves are intact after surgery but now we have to wait to see if the blood supply will carry on to the hearing nerves (up to 4-6 weeks). The swelling around the area obviously is a facter also, so within a short time the emotions are back on the roller-coaster ride!
Asa has picked up fast and soon is on the circuit with the physios and making good progress.
Sunday PM - maybe a bit too much too soon as Asa is feeling nauseous and needs medication to settle him down. It must be so hard for him as the balance nerve has been cut and the body has to adjust. What with Asa's vision as well it must be twice as hard. Asa isnt eating much and the IV line remains in.
Just done another circuit of the LA Grand Prix (about 40 meter). too much, just been sick, medicine on its way. Slept a lot through the afternoon - Debbie not too sure on the extent of his hearing.
Asa's first game of 'Lanza', though this is my chance (card game, need to be good at maths). Asa WON!!!
5.50pm Shot of morphine - first pain refief for 12 hours. Sleeping well, last medication 10pm.
- Paul Singleton
Asa has now had his first operation and it went well. The next few days will determine the success of the opertion. He is doing well, and our thought stay with him over the next few days as he recovers.
Asa is flying today (29 Spetember) to LA for the first of his operations to save his hearing. Asa will be going to the House Ear Institue to work with Dr Brackman. The first operation will be on Thursday 2nd October at 12 noon.
We wish him all the luck, and look forward to his return soon.
A huge thank you to Big Al and The Doc from Isle of Wight Radio, who broadcast live from Wootton roundabout to support Asa's Big Day Out!†
The IW Council have now said that the signs can stay. Thanks to everyone who showed their support by 'honking' as you went by.
See you all on Sunday for the big day out!
IW Council have asked Debbie and Paul to remove signs advertising Asa's Big Day Out stating that it was advertising Swainston Manor.
Thanks to Alex Dyke & The Doc from IW Radio who jumped onto this story, and are even planning to stage a protest at the round-a-bout in question (along the Racecourse, Wootton) from 10.15 tommorrow (25 September).
We want as many people as possible to join them in this protest, and Asa himself is hoping to be there too.
If you can't make it, please register you protest in the Guestbook and we will start a petition.
Alex Dyke & The Doc are hoping to broadcast live from the round-a-bout
Newport Round Table have organised a Dinner Dance and Charitable Auction in aid of the Asa Singleton Trust Fund on Saturday 27 September 2003.

Nine of us will pay for ourselves to trek through Peru and the Amazon, this will be no holiday, as we will be treking up to 6 - 8 hours a day. Trekking through through the Inca Trail up to Machu Pichu (altitude of 15,500 ft) then down to the Amazon Jungle, trek and canoe.
We are seeking to raise as much money as possible through sponsorship towards Asa's operation.

Asa was born on the 2nd May 1991, and like his sister Dominique, seemed a bright bouncy baby full of life, vitality and vigour. However after only a few short weeks it became apparent that he had some form of deficiency with his eyesight, as he was unable to focus his attention on any specific object for even the shortest length of time.
As a precautionary measure he was referred to a specialist, and tragically,
having undergone a series of consultations and tests at Great Ormond Street
Hospital was diagnosed as suffering from a genetic disease called Neurofibromatosis
2 (NF2).
This disease affects 1 in 40,000 people and is as yet incurable and potentially
life-threatening. Research is ongoing and they have isolated the faulty gene,
but it is in very early stages and we all know how long these things can take.
MRI scans soon detected that not only did Asa have tumours, but also optic glimoa
and an acute abnormality in this left eye.
So far, Asa has had to endure two major operations, the first of which when
he was only 5 years old. The first to remove the tumour from his optic nerve,
the second to remove a tumour dangerously close to this upper spinal cord. This
is without the frequent tests, scans, probes, and Asa's worst nightmare, blood
tests and injections!
The last couple of years have been good ones for Asa and his family, despite the diagnosis of a hormone imbalance caused by a tumour on his pituitary gland, for which he has nightly injections. The annual scan showed that the tumours found on his lower spinal cord and his acoustic nerves hadn't changed, but this was too short a respite for everyone, as the latest scan has shown the growth of the acoustic tumours to be virulent enough to cause major concern for his hearing. Having recently seen the ENT surgeon, it would seem that unfortunately surgeons in Britain would be unable to do the 9-hour operation (per ear) and save Asa even a partial amount of his very valuable hearing. Asa's parents have decided that this is something they are not prepared to let happen unless there is no other way, and are currently seeking opinions from surgeons in America and France who have more specialised resources at hand. Another option may be to have an operation, not to remove the tumours, but to shrink them with radiation, (Gamma knife procedures) but this holds its own problems and uncertainties both for Asa's hearing and the long term affects of having been exposed to radiation (cancer). All this is necessary though to try and preserve one of the only major senses Asa has left. No one would like to imagine a life of blackness and silence but this is what the future could hold for a wonderfully brave little boy, unless Asa and his parents can see and talk to the necessary experts in this field.
This story paints a bleak picture for anyone who does not have the good fortune to have Asa as a part of their life, be it family or friends (of which he has too many to count!). But to know Asa is to love him, his energy, his love of life and his almost constant optimistic outlook on everything around him, not only his own problems but others too, is an inspiration to everyone. Asa is registered blind and currently attends full time mainstream school, with the aid of a full time assistant, and partakes in all activities he can. He is very intelligent and absolutely refuses to allow his disabilities to hinder him. He has had various hobbies over the years, which include motorbikes, as a passenger and riding them (until he drove it through his Nan's greenhouse!!!), playing the electric guitar, his Playstation 2 and James Bond (especially the gadgets) to name but a few.
However, despite Asa's fortitude and resilience in battling against such overwhelming odds, and even after the decision of what will happen to his acoustic tumours has been made, his illness will always be ongoing and progressive. Although he has a dedicated team of surgeons, doctors and nurses looking after him, they are "writing the book" as they go due to the fact that Asa is very rare in that he was born with symptoms of NF2. Sufferers do not usually display symptoms until their early teens. They are also always aware that Asa's condition could deteriorate at any time and leave him not only blind and deaf but claim his life.
Naturally we all try to remain optimistic, but this becomes increasingly hard when there is always another tumour casting a dark shadow over us. Asa's Dad (Paul) has taken a year off from work in light of these new developments in order to try and raise funds for what will be a very costly, but ultimately worthwhile cause. Namely, let a little boy enjoy his life as best he can. Our major concern now, as time is of the essence, is to raise enough money for Asa and his parents to travel, stay, pay for consultations and surgery abroad. All we can do is wait and hope that someone will be able to give Asa the thing he wants more than anything in the world, his hearing.
There are several ways you can help.
We are currently applying for charitable status for the Asa singleton Trust Fund. Once this has been processed you will be able to make donations online using your debit or credit card. Through WorldPay we will accept all Visa, MasterCard, Switch, American Express, JCB, Diners, Laser and Electron cards.
Make a donation by cheque by sending it to 54 Pellhurst Road, Ryde, Isle of Wight, PO33 3BP. Please make cheques payable to 'Asa Singleton Trust Fund'.
Organise you own event to raise money for Asa. Some of the events people having been organising are Art & Craft Auctions, Jumble Sales, even a sponsored trek to Peru.
This is not a big charity; we are just family and friends trying to do our best. Everyone's donation counts, so please don't think yours wont make a difference, it does!
A very big Thank You to everyone who has supported Asa. Some have given time or materials, and some have donated anonymously.

hello Asa, my name is mark,I too have NF2. In seventh grade a girl threw a book at me for teasing her. well, the seventh grade history book hit my behind my left ear leaving a bump. But thr bump never went away and that's when the strange pains in my head started..long story short nine different doctors told my that my lump was just a fatty cist it wasn't causing the pains & thaatit was only superficial. finally two years ago (after suffering whith the various pains, slowed reflex's numbness in my shins, fingers, & face) I was taken seriously whe my left eye went crossed for now reason. well there was a reason but the doctors still couldn't figure out what my problem was they thought I looded perfectly healthy for my age. I said no I'm not your eye doesn't just go crossed for no reason and I wasn't leaving the E.R. until I had a C.A.T. scan. They told me "well Mr. Duff that's going to cost you $1,000 dollers, out of my pocket because I didn't have insurence at the time. I agreed, got the scan only to be moved out of the E.R.and then told that I probubly had cistic sarcosis(an abnormal amount of calicum deposits in my brain,or some kind of parasite from eating undercooked pork. The doctor on duty wanted to send me to County USC hospital in LA but I said no thank you by this time it was9:30 on a friday night I was not spending the weekend in the hospital. two months later I got insurence and a MRI three weeks after that I was on thr operating table having 1 Orange (the fruit) sized tumor removed from my brain.I also , after recovering from the 1st surgery had four more removed from between the base of my skull and C-1 ,C-2 and C-2,C-3 that were pinching the blood flow to my brain. It's time for me to go back and get another one removed.. Asa I feel your pain, the ones that we find hard to explain to those who havent walked in our shoes my preyers's are with you and your family. PS your not alone:)

Hello Asa.
Just wondered how you were doing. I know your Uncle Ross and he lets me know how you are from time to time.
Just wanted to drop a note to say that I admire your out look on life, that you are living it to the fullest and doing things that I would not have the nerve to do i.e. jumping out of planes. You seem to be one hell of a guy and your determination to enjoy life is an inspiration to us all.
How is the guitar playing going?
Keep smiling!

Hi Asa,
I'm from the farrrrrr east.... in southeast Asia- Malaysia. I found out about you through The National Enquirer. I have NF 2 as well. I know how tough it can be to live with NF but you have an absolutely amazing dad. I wish I had one just like yours! Unlike the US, NF is not really known here so it makes it extra difficult for me to live a normal life. But I make the most out of it and I'm definitely inspired by your strength anf courage to battle this life-threatening disease. I REALLY WISH I had half the strength you have. I hope everything goes well for you. You can email me anytime if you like keisha_lfc@hotmail.com

I've recently seen your story on German Television. I really hope that you will quickly find a cure to stop your disease. I was also very impressed about your force and strength to fight against it.
And when I saw your World Tour, I hardly could believe that a boy in your age is able to enjoy life so much despite the injustice you have to suffer...
I wish good luck to you and your family!!! PS: Sorry for my bad English ;)

Thankyou so much for the support and wonderful messages left for my son Asa.
We are now in the process of making arangements to go to America to do a number of TV interviews. If we can now help in bringing this terrible condition to the attention of many unaware public, then I think so much good can come from this. This condition now effects One in Thirty Thousand but in terms of the drug companys this does not represent a good return in profits. This condition is not well funded and if We can in anyway bring the attention of our story to so many, then hope that this will help.
Asa is happy and doing well and to him all this exposure does not worry him at all.
He is so positive and even though we have seen this condition take hold so strong he will keep going.
Thankyou all for being there.

Hi Jody and all at at L.A.
Thankyou for leaving message,
well as you have been reading Asa is o.k. but it is a worrying time and we just hope that Asa's positive attitude will help him through
Asa has been busy with preperation's for his birthday party in May and also this week took a look at High school which he will attend in September. We have two big birthdays this year Dominique 16 and Asa 13.
My year off from work ends next week and I think we have set up everything I set out to do for Asa if not more.I intend on taking Asa traveling
as and when Asa's health permits and that is in planning now.Friends are buiding Asa a Go Kart 150cc and that should be ready soon.
We have large sand banks for its test run!
I hope you are all well and we hope to drop in on are travels.

Hi from Los Angeles! I am so glad the website was updated!
Paul, Deb and Asa, this is Jody from Seton Guest Center.
And hello to all the seton guests that still stay in touch with Asa.HOw great email is!
The news is scary... but I know your family and god will help you make the right decisions. I hope my coworkers/doctors in L.A. give you the right direction.I know the spine tumors can be painful, and getting the brain tumors out at the right time and with some ABI to keep hearing is also important.
I wish you all well! Asa, my Harley Guitar Playing Man... I hope you get to play hard at your birthday coming up! I love my Isle Of Wight Calendar! What a beautiful place! You are so lucky to live there.
Be well...
Love, Jody

Hi ASA (mum and dad, too). Sorry to hear you're having problems. After I read about what some of the others who have had surgery are going through, I feel very lucky. Like you, though, the balance part is still very tricky. A few other problems that I try not to dwell on. We think of all of you often and our time together at Seton and St. Vincent's. Keep the chin up and play some tunes.

Hi
just a quick note to let you all know what is going on at the moment.Asa is having a few problems with his balance and pain in the lower back.We are having meetings with his consultants and various tests to try and find out the reasons. After the MRI scans results which showed a increase in tumours we now need to monitor the situation closely.
Asa is fine in himself and at this moment upstairs having a guitar lesson. We are planning a big birthday party for him on May 1st at a local hall and hopefully Asa will be playing guitar that night!
Also a big thankyou to all of you that have kept in touch, sorry it has been so long in updating the site.
We have been taking a break from the fund raising but intend starting with some new events soon.

Hi Asa, my name is Stephanie and I am 32 years old. I just found out this past Oct. 2003 that I have NF2. I have serveral tumors all over the place. My first surgery is scheduled this February 18, 2004 and a second later in the year. I've read your courageous story and my prayers are with you. This disease needs to have more attention brought to it. I have been mis-diagnosed for ten years! I'm a little mad but I know I shouldn't be. I have this inner desire to bring more awarness of nf2 to the public. My husband was searching the web when we came across your website. It gave me hope and strength. My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family. God bless you little Asa. -Love Stephanie Reini, reiniksks@hotmail.com

PERU
We returned on Wednesday night after 32 hours of travel.
A trip of a lifetime and a experience we will never forget.
On the mountain trek we didnt pass any other travelers and the scenic passes were breathtaking.
We reached a height of 4800 mtrs and for me personally a very emotional moment. We intend updating the website asap with photos and personal stories.Thankyou for keeping in touch,Asa is doing fine.

I treck up hills and mountians
somtimes the outlooks bleak
and when we rest i leave the track
to take a little leak
urination is a dangerous task
and has to be done fast
cos if you hang about to long
the others will treck past
and it would be quite easy
to find you are alone
and then your in the poopoo
cos you wont know your way home
so if you fancy trecking
take this advice from me
keep one eye on the trail guide
when you stop to take a pee.
